Some 1,260 pregnant housewives from 36 districts of Tangerang regency gathered at the World Harvest building in Lippo Karawaci, Tangerang on Thursday.
They anthusiastically listened to the explanation given by Dr. Utami Roesly of the Indonesian Lectation Center while watching video slides that showed how a 20 minutes-old infant could crawl on his mother’s breast and could find the nipple to breast-feed without help for the first one hour after birth.
“We are really impressed with the videos show. It’s hard to believe but it’s real that fresh baby could do so,” said Melly, 31 and Mila, 21, two of the 1,260 pregnant housewives told The Jakarta Post.
Both Melly and Mila from Panongan district said they were ready to implement early breast-feeding initiation (IMD) for their babies later and on and they will tell other neighbours to do so, too because IMD can reduce the risk of infant’s death.
“I am very happy I can join the Gebrak Sehat 2008 public information session organized by the administration because I have more knowledge and awareness of the importance IMD,” said Juniah, 24, a housewive of Pondok Aren district.
In cooperation with USAID, Care International Indonesia, the Tangerang regental administration officially launched IMD through the New Movement of Healthy Children 2008 (Gebrak Sehat 2008) to public on Thursday.
The IMD was organized as an attempt to press infant malnutrition cases in the regency that reached up to 2,890 last year and infant mortality rate that has been estimated to reach up to 2,900 this year.
“Gerbak Sehat 2008 is a movement to promote IMD and Exlusive breast-feeding up to 24 months to improve the degree of our children’s health,” Hani Heryanto, head of the regency Health Agency said.
He said before the launching of Gebrak Sehat 2008, the agency and Care International Indonesia had conducted a series of IMD workshop to introduce IMD to midwives, public health clinics, hospitals, universities and journalists.
“Through this occasion, we also want to express our deep gratitude to USAID and Care International Indonesia, World Food Proramme for their supports that enable us to conduct Gebrak Sehat 2008,” he said.
The main point of the Gebrak Sehat 2008 was the reading out of a declaration of joint-commitment to implement IMD in the regency from now and on.
The declaration was read out simultanesouly by Dr. Uce Kusuma of the Indonesian Doctors Association (IDI), Dr. Marruzzaman of the Indonesian Child Doctors Association (IDAI), Dr. Bambang of the Indonesian Ginecology & Obstetri Association (POGI), Nasih of the Indonesia Midwives Association, a representative of the Indonesian Nutrition Expert Association, Chandra Elia Iskandar and Dewi Karno of the Tangerang Regency Women Welafere Movement (PKK) and four representatives of 2008 pregnant housewives who already committed to IMD.
To entertain the pregnant housewives, the organizing committee also featured balada singer Oppy Andaresta who deliver messages on the importance of IMD to housewives.
Anugrah Terindah and ASI saja enam bulan pertama (Andai) were the tittels of two songs Oppy presented to the audience. “IMD is ok, ASI yes, yes, yes the best for babies, Oppy said after singing and was followed by audience.
Comedian drama featuring Keluarga Si Doel which was ended with a talk show guided by Dr. Utami Roesly was the most interesting part of IMD introduction to public because it managed to make all attendants lough.
The Gebrak Sehat 2008 was closed with the presentation four records from the Indonesian Muesum of Records by Jaya Suprana to Ismet Iskandar and Hani Heryanto for success in gathering 1,260 pregnants housewives, Care International Indonesia and USAID for their supports for Gebrak Sehat 2008.
