The construction of Tangerang regency's southern ring road that will directly connect Serpong district with Tigaraksa, the regency capital, is soon to be finished.
"Hopefully, the new road will be accessible to the public by the middle of the year," the regency's public works agency head, Hermansyah, said Monday.
He said the remaining work on the final phase of the 32-kilometer road project was to install traffic signs and street lights.
"We are currently installing as many as 85 warning and direction signs and 1,200 street lights along the road," he said.
He said the project was expected to be completed in June so the road could be opened to public in July.
Hermansyah also said the regency would repair roads this year.
Residents have been complaining about potholes scattered over more than 100 sections of the regency's main roads.
During the campaign ahead of the Tangerang regent election early this year, the reelected regent Ismet Iskandar and his new deputy Rano Karno promised to improve transportation infrastructure.
Ismet said during the campaign he would prioritize initiatives to rebuild damaged roads with concrete because unstable land conditions meant roads could easily be damaged, especially during the rainy season.
"I don't want to leave more work for my successor and I need another term to finish the road work I started," Ismet promised residents during his campaign in January.
However, three months later, there are still no road repairs and motorists are continuing to complain.
"Regent Ismet hasn't fulfilled his promise to repair the damaged roads. We don't want anything from the administration but smooth roads," Ujang Ranji, a minivan driver on the Ciputat-Cileduk route, told The Jakarta Post.
Hendrikus, a minivan passenger, said potholes made his trip bumpy.
"It also takes other passengers and I longer to get to Ciputat from home because the minivans can not go faster," he said.
In response to people's complaints about potholes along damaged roads in many districts, Hermansyah said road repair work would start in June.
"The administration has allocated Rp 172 billion (US$18.75 million) from this year's budget to finance the road repair project," he said, adding the tender process for the project had been completed.
Previously, the Jakarta administration told the press it had Rp 60.5 billion for provincial road repairs and Rp 180 billion for municipal roads.
