Former hospital director arrested for alleged graft

Prosecutors have arrested Johan Thamrin Saleh, former president director of the Sitanala Leporsy Hospital for alleged embezzelement of in the hospital’s space rent between 2004 and 2007.

“We have to pick the suspect for arrest because he had been incooperative with prosecutors for questioings,” Rahmat Haryanto, chief of special crimes section at the Tangerang prosecutos’ office said on Friday.

He said prosecutors had four times summoned the suspect for questionings but he never appeared to fullfil the summons, saying that he was sick or he was out of town.

“Therefore, we have to arrest and send him to the Tangerang Youth penitentiary to pave the way for the examination,” he said.

The embezzlement case began to be smelled when the ndew hospital president director Luwiharsih replaced Johan Thamrin Saleh early this year.

Soon after she replaced Johan Thamrin, Assyfa Foundation, that manages an education and training center for midwifery at the hospital came to Luwiharsih with cash of Rp 25 million but the later rejected the money.

After being investigated, Johan Thamrin apparently rented some space of the hospital building to the foundation at Rp 25 million per year but Thamrin only handed down Rp 7.5 million of the three year’s rent to the hospital.

Rahmat said Johan Thamrin will be charged with violating Articles 2 and 3 of the 1999 anti-corruption law Article that carries a maximum punishment of a 20-years jail term. Multa Fidrus/JP
