Customs and excise officers at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport seized a device described as a "universal monitoring system" worth Rp 3 billion after a failed attempted to smuggle it into the country from Malaysia.
Control and intelligence officer Eko Darmanto told a press briefing Monday that the device could be used to tape telephone conversations.
A package containing a monitor, keyboard, printer and computer-like box used to store recorded data was seized.
The universal monitoring system is designed to monitor, record, replay, analyze and archive telephone, facsimile and Internet traffic.
Eko said similar systems were widely used by telecommunications providers in the country to identify telephone callers for billing purposes.
As required by law, "purchases of such devices are strictly monitored, with the exception of the telecom industry...for security reasons".
The customs office seized the package on Sept. 8 from a Malaysian passenger arriving at the airport.
According to Eko, the passenger said the package was to be delivered to an embassy on Jl. Rasuna Said, South Jakarta.
"We had to confiscate the package because the passenger couldn't verify what he brought and did not declare it."
During the press briefing, the seizure of thousands of cellular phones as well as cosmetics, medicines and air guns was announced.
More than 3,000 Nokia and Siemens phones worth approximately Rp 2.3 billion have been seized on their way into the country from Hong Kong. The other contraband was from China.
Officer Eko reported a new method used by a Chinese national to smuggle cell phones -- a jacket with enough pockets to fit 300 phones.
"Importing air guns requires a special permit...so they will be turned over to the police," he said.
Some smuggled products arrived at the airport after smugglers managed to evade customs officials at Simpang Tiga Airport in Pekanbaru, Riau.
